David Gushee: Coming to Terms with Torture: Truth, Accountability, and Renunciation

June 24, 2014 @ 7:00 pm

Join us as Dr. David Gushee leads a Torture Awareness Month discussion on what we already know of the CIA’s systematic use of torture, and what we expect to learn from the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report once it is released. Speaking with him are Rev. Luke Powery, Dean of Chapel and Associate Professor of the Practice of Homiletics at Duke University, and Christina Cowger, Coordinator for North Carolina Stop Torture Now.

Dr. Gushee is the Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and the Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University where he is also theologian-in-residence for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Dr. Gushee served on the Task Force on Detainee Treatment of the The Constitution Project, where he has helped to make the public more aware of the United States’ use of torture. He was also the principal drafter of the Evangelical Declaration against Torture in 2007.

The Council is co-sponsoring this event with The Constitution Project, National Religious Campaign Against TortureKARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, and NC StopTorture Now.
